TWELVE quality wordsearch puzzles (in a zip file) based on key terms from six Roald Dahl Books:
Fantastic Mr Fox;
George’s Marvellous Medicine;
James and the Giant Peach;
Matilda;
The Magic Finger;
The Twits.
10-word and 30-word wordsearches for each story. (Simple differentiation / use depending on the time available.)
These were used with Year / Grade 5 children when they were reading Roald Dahl stories and they thoroughly enjoyed them (and older (or younger!) children will enjoy them too.) These were used in class as a starter, to support their recollection of events in the books, as well as to reinforce spellings. They were also used with students as part of World Book Day celebrations and as part of school library sessions to promote the love of reading.
This pack contains 4 separate activities.
The first is a 2-page activity, for which the kids need to name, trace and then design (colouring, painting, glittering etc) each of the featured dinosaurs (grey silhouettes). There is a table of names on page 2 which the kids can use to help them name the dinos. A file with the dinosaur silhouettes and their names is included.
The second two activities are wordsearches. One has 15 dinosaurs to find, and the other has 30 dinosaurs to find. Each one also features 5 black silhouettes of popular dinosaurs which the kids to try to name.
Wordsearches are a great way to reinforce key terms, enhance vocabulary, help with spelling as well as pattern recognition. They are great for the classroom, at home and events.
The last activity is a wonderful anagrams activity. The kids need to read the (often strange) set of words and then rearrange the letters to figure out the name of the dinosaur. ‘carpet riots’ anyone? (Answer file included)
These are a collection of wordsearches of high frequency words for grades / years 5 and 6.
There are two for grade 5 and six for grade 6.
The wordsearches contain an instruction for a challenge to complete sentences using the words from the wordsearch.
These wordsearch activities reinforce spellings, help strengthen a child’s vocabulary, emphasise pattern recognition and are great for practicing drawing lines! The additional tasks allow the child to demonstrate their understanding of the words.

This quiz can be used as a comprehension exercise where children watch the film “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” and then answer as many questions correctly as they can.
The adjusted / differentiated activity can be that the film is watched in two halves (or smaller chunks) to give children less to remember all at once and more of a chance to get all 18 questions correct!
This activity can also be an opportunity to practice spellings, learn something new (what exactly is a barnacle?) and most importantly, have fun! You can also encourage children to come up with their own questions to test others.
This is a suitable task for Grade 4 upwards (approximately 8+ years) and FYI the film has a PG rating. Answer sheet is included.
If not used for skills practice, just save it for a treat or a rainy day!
